Dr. John Fontanesi, Ph.D.

Director

John Fontanesi, PhD, is the director of UCSD’s Center for Management Science in Health and a professor in the university’s Department of Pediatrics and Department of Family and Preventive Medicine. Dr. Fontanesi is a recognized expert in operational research in health care and is the principle investigator on a number of studies examining the operational conditions and organizational structures that facilitate or constrain organizational effectiveness. Recent research has included an analysis of California’s Vaccines for Children program and a quality improvement project involving Rady Children’s Hospital in San Diego. Dr. Fontanesi holds an M.Ed. from the University of Arizona and a Ph.D. in clinical psychology from United States International University.

Debra Bowers

Administrative Analyst

Debra Bowers is an administrative analyst at UCSD’s Center for Management Science in Health. In this role, she manages client relations and project development, and helps source funding opportunities for the Center. Prior to joining UCSD, Ms. Bowers worked in sales training, project management, and patient education in the pharmaceutical and medical fields.

Emily Bass

Research Technical Writer

Emily Bass serves as a research technical writer at UCSD’s Center for Management Science in Health. There, she oversees all editorial processes for the Center, including developing grant proposals and editing articles for publication in academic journals. Ms. Bass’ previous professional experience includes serving in various editorial capacities in the medical and education fields. Ms. Bass is pursuing an M.A. in rhetoric and writing studies at San Diego State University.

Jennifer Lee

Research Coordinator

Jennifer Lee is a research coordinator at UCSD’s Center for Management Science in Health. In this role, she manages data collection for the Center's workflow studies and coordinates the training and scheduling of onsite clinical observers. Ms. Lee is a UCSD alumnus with a BS in Pharmacological Chemistry.
